Luohu advances innovation with Sino-European Center for Biomedicine and Health
In recent years, Luohu District has focused on high-quality economic development, adapting to local conditions to foster new forms of productivity while actively attracting and cultivating the science and technology services industry.
The Sino-European Center of Biomedicine and Health (SEC) has become a key player in this effort, with the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences being a major contributor. SEC gathers experts and scholars across various fields, including biopharmaceuticals, biomaterials, biotechnology, and AI-driven pharmaceutical innovation.
Notably, SEC’s three incubation platforms—“innovation, translation, and industry”—have attracted numerous international research teams. They view SEC as an ideal place to explore cutting-edge health technologies and rapidly translate scientific achievements into practical applications.
Diana, Chief Scientist at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, commented: “I’m an immunologist, and I've been in this field for over 50 years. My goal is to enhance vaccine effectiveness and improve human health. But I must emphasize that collaboration is key in both scientific research and the translation of research into real-world outcomes.”
Aldo, another Chief Scientist at SIAT, added: “Our dream is to make SEC a flagship for biotechnology, not only in Shenzhen but also across the Greater Bay Area.”
The Sino-European Center is a new research institution jointly established by the Luohu District Government and SIAT. Together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, they have implemented a dual-appointment system, bringing in six academicians from China, Europe, and the United States, along with more than 60 core researchers and over 30 distinguished talents. "We aim to build a vertical innovation ecosystem at SEC," said Yu Qiuliang, General Manager of SEC.
With over 20,000 square meters of industrial space provided by Luohu, the center allows entrepreneurs and scientists to gather, fostering collaboration and accelerating the pace of innovation and development.
In just over a year, SEC, based in Luohu, has successfully attracted more than 30 companies in the biopharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. It has also established partnerships with over 10 European biopharmaceutical companies and research institutions. A united ecosystem of talent, capital, market, and industry is rapidly taking shape.
