Rare wildlife visits elementary school in Luohu
On April 8, Dongxiao Primary School in Shenzhen’s Luohu District welcomed some “very special guests” — including red-whiskered bulbuls, egrets, and ancient plant species such as Alsophila spinulosa (a type of tree fern) and Cycas revoluta (commonly known as the sago palm). This one-of-a-kind experience marked the launch of the 2025 “Beautiful Luohu, I Take the Lead” ecological civilization education series, setting the stage for a new chapter in campus-based environmental education across the district.
Luohu is often described as a “natural museum within the city,” with Wutong Mountain boasting a forest coverage rate of 83.91% and harboring more than 2,000 species of plants and animals.
The inaugural class at Dongxiao Primary aimed to bring these natural wonders directly into the classroom, giving students a rare, hands-on opportunity to engage with local wildlife and prehistoric plant life. The initiative seeks to instill a deep respect and love for nature in children from an early age, cultivating a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
